A Dry & Mild Thanksgiving...

Summary

We are in an extended dry pattern that will become milder through Thanksgiving week. The pattern may begin to shift around the 27th with the chance for storms into early December.

Short Term Forecast

Still no changes to the forecast this morning (Saturday). We are into a prolonged dry spell that may last through at least next Saturday the 26th.

High pressure will continue to keep us dry through Thanksgiving week...

...and as it becomes stronger the high temperatures will become milder through the period.

Highs will warm into the 40s for the lower elevations and lake level starting Sunday, and then into the 50s by Thanksgiving Day into next weekend. No precipitation is forecast anywhere near northern CA through next Saturday the 26th.

Extended Forecast

The long-range models continue to show a shift in the pattern starting next Sunday the 27th, with a trough digging into the West Coast.

trough

That could bring in a storm sometime next Sunday into Monday the 29th.

It's nice to see a storm finally enter the 10-day forecast window! Now we need to get it into the 5-day window by Wednesday so that we can start to break down the possible details of snowfall. For now, we'll continue to watch the trends which continue to show increasing chances for precip starting around the 27th.

Fantasy Range:

Beyond day 10 the long-range models suggest the pattern could continue to feature troughing over the West and the ridge in the East.

trough

That could keep the storm door open through the week of the 28th into at least the beginning of December. The long-range ensemble mean models continue to show a wetter period possible from the 27th through at least the 2nd-3rd of December.

Let's hope these positive trends continue so that we can have more natural snow after the dry and mild period coming up this week. We still need a lot of base building as we start the ski season.

Stay tuned...BA

P.S. The next post will be Monday morning, have a great weekend!

Forecast Anywhere

You can now get a forecast for any location (on land) across the globe, and you can save any of these "Custom Locations" as a favorite.

Any "Custom Location" comes with estimated 24-hour snowfall. This means that you can set a "Custom Location" for your favorite backcountry spot and get estimated snowfall and estimated snowfall history. Since most backcountry areas do not have snow measurement equipment located at that exact spot, this feature will be a useful way to get a general estimate of how much snow has fallen.

To set your first "Custom Location", make sure that you are using the latest version of our iOS or Android apps (this works on our website, too!), then go to the Map tab, tap any spot on the map, and you're on the way to creating your first "Custom Location".
