A Warmer & Drier Pattern...

High-pressure building over the West will bring a warmer and drier pattern through the weekend of the 7th-8th. A slight cooldown with a stray shower is possible around the 10th. Overall we could be in a fairly dry pattern for the foreseeable future.

Short Term Forecast

We saw some colder and unsettled weather to start October, with some snow showers for the higher elevations and a dusting of snow on the upper mountains!

There were even reports of several inches of snow falling farther south in the Central Sierra.

Warmer & Drier:

A large high-pressure ridge is building in over the West as we go later into the week, with warmer and drier weather likely continuing through the weekend of the 7th-8th.

The change in the forecast models from last week's forecast is for the trough digging into the Pacific NW to be slower (not by the 8th) and not as far south early next week (9th-10th).

The latest model runs suggest that the best chance for a storm to dig farther south with some cooler air and the chance for a shower or two could be Tuesday the 10th. Overall most of the precipitation is forecast to stay to our north over the next 10 days...

...and temperatures are expected to remain near to above average outside of the possibility of a slight cooldown early next week.

Extended Forecast

Beyond 10 days, the long-range models suggest that ridging could become more established over the West.

ridge 2

That could keep most of the West on the drier and milder side into the 3rd week of October.

We'll continue to watch the long-range trends to see when we could see a shift in the pattern to cooler and unsettled, and when we could see some measurable snowfall for the northern Sierra.

Stay tuned...BA
