New Year's Eve Update...

Update

Not much change to the forecast today.  We have mild weather with partly cloudy skies and highs in the 50's through Tuesday.

For Wednesday into Thursday the first wave of precip moves in from an area of low pressure sitting off the coast.  Snow levels start above 10,000 feet and slowly fall to 8,000 feet by Thursday.  That doesn't matter much as the precip amounts look very light so only up to a coating of wet snow possible on the highest peaks.

The forecast models this morning are showing the low moving inland Friday into Saturday to our North.  The GFS is further North and on the latest run brings the 2nd wave of precip into Southern CA to our South on Saturday, not adding much precip through Friday.

The European model pull up much heavier precip from the South with the 2nd round of precip on Friday.

The snow levels may be down around 8,000 feet maybe slightly lower for the 2nd round.  So we could see a few inches of wet snow on the mountains above 8,000 feet Friday if the wetter European model is correct.

Here is the updated snowfall forecast through Friday.

new forecast

So overall still a mild but a wetter pattern Wednesday through Friday with some wet snow possible above 8,000 feet.

Next weekend the GFS model moves the low inland to our North and keeps us fairly dry.  The European model moves it through to our North, but further South keep some light showers going with snow levels lowering.

We are still watching for a storm to start the week of the 8th.  The latest GFS runs are forming another cut-off low which is also slowing the storm until Wednesday.  The European model is holding the trough together with a fast moving colder storm for Monday-Tuesday.

Then the long-range forecast shows a ridge rebuilding over the West Coast going into mid-month.

That's it for now, we will track these storms closely all week.  Have a fun night and stay safe.  Happy New Year!
