Western US is DEEP & more snow coming

Summary

We’ve been in a fantastic powder cycle during the last few days with 20-80 inches of snow falling across the west, and more snow is coming to the coast this weekend and then for all of the west next week.

Short Term Forecast

Storm Cycle Recap

From Saturday, February 2 through Thursday, February 7, multiple storms delivered some of the best conditions of the season with back-to-back-to-back powder days.

The totals are:

  • California: 80+ inches in 5 days
  • Utah: 60+ inches in 4 days
  • Wyoming: 50 inches in 4 days
  • Arizona: 40 inches in 4 days
  • Colorado: 20-40 inches in 4 days
  • Idaho: 24 inches in 4 days

And there’s more where that came from!

Forecast for Thursday & Friday (Feb 7-8)

But first, there will be a break for most of the west through the end of the week as we’ll be in between storm systems. Unfortunately, over the northeast, a storm will track too far inland and this means most mountains will see rain before precipitation turns back to light snow after the storm passes.

Forecast for The Weekend (Feb 9-10)

Here we go again! The next storm system should bring the most snow to California where totals will likely be 2-4 FEET with back-to-back powder days on Saturday and Sunday.

Forecast for Next Week (Feb 11-15)

And the fun continues! Forecasting snow is a dream job no matter the weather pattern, and the job gets even better when I can bring good news for nearly all mountain regions.

We should see multiple waves of snow over the west with powder possible early and late in the week. For the northeast, a late-week storm might stay close enough to the coast (not too far inland) to bring mixed precipitation or all snow to the mounters of western and northern New England.

Extended Forecast

The Outlook for February 16-20

I think that the same weather pattern we saw from February 11-15 will continue through February 16-20 as the signal for cold air and snowfall hangs over the west while the northeast stays on the edge of the colder/warmer air.

Thanks for reading and look for the next forecast on Monday, February 11.
