Future powder favors the southwest and northwest

Summary

The past week brought the deepest snow to the Northwest. For this week, we’ll look to both a Southwestern and a Northwestern storm to deliver more powder, and the snow should continue through the middle of March.

Short Term Forecast

The Last Five Days

Snowfall during the first week of March was healthy from coast-to-coast. The standout area was Banff Sunshine in Canada with a five-day total of 26 inches, and Mt. Baker with a five-day total of 31 inches.

Forecast for Mon, Mar 9 – Tue, Mar 10

Over the weekend, a storm brought a few inches of snow to many areas of the west and up to 15 inches of snow over the Northwest. To start the week, we’ll see a continuation of showers as one storm tracks over the Northern Rockies and another storm tracks over Southern California. If the track of the southern storm lines up just right, there could be significant snow over the mountains of far Southern California.

Forecast for Wed, Mar 11 – Fri, Mar 13

We will end the week with two systems. Lighter snow should fall over the Northwest, while in the Southwest, the storm over Southern California should move toward New Mexico and Colorado with the potential for significant snow on Friday.

Forecast for Sat, Mar 14 – Sun, Mar 15

The big story for the upcoming weekend will be the significant storm that should bring snow to the Northwest and potentially Northern California as well. Following a dry February, the Lake Tahoe area saw snow during the past two weekends, and they could use another round of deep snow, so let’s hope that this storm takes a slight over-water track to bring big flakes to California.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Mon, Mar 16 – Fri, Mar 20

The third week of March should set up a stormy pattern over the western United States. One storm could track across the Southwest with a lot of moisture. Another storm could track over the Northern Rockies with cold air. It’ll be fun to watch this scenario play out!

Thanks so much for reading and please check back for my next post on Thursday, March 12th.
