Western Canada gets back in the flow

Summary

New Hampshire and Maine just scored their first big snowfall of the season last weekend. Over the upcoming week, the pattern will turn more active across the northwest with heavy snow expected across British Columbia, while light to moderate snow will work its way south of the border into the Pacific Northwest & Northern Rockies later in the week.

Short Term Forecast

Recent Snow in New England

A Nor'easter resulted in heavy snowfall across New England this past weekend, especially in New Hampshire and Maine. Not all ski areas are reporting snow yet this season, but here were the deepest snow totals recorded at ski areas on Sunday, December 6 with Sugarloaf coming in with the highest total of 15 inches (and later reported a storm total of 18" after Monday morning's report was tallied). Check out the most recent 1-day snow reports and 5-day snow reports on OpenSnow's Powder Finder.

Snow returns to Western Canada this week

High pressure will begin to break down across the West this week and British Columbia and Alaska will be favored for heavy snowfall, with moderate amounts also expected for Alberta, Washington, and Oregon. Here is our latest 5-Day Powder Finder, which shows the deepest snow forecasts over the next 5 days.

Forecast for Mon, Dec 7 – Tue, Dec 8

A strong storm will bring heavy precipitation to British Columbia and Alberta early this week. On Monday, many areas near the coast and lower elevation areas inland will see rain, but colder air and a changeover to snow will occur on Tuesday with heavy totals for many areas. A weak system will also bring a round of light snow to the Southern and Central Appalachians on Monday.

Forecast for Wed, Dec 9 – Thu, Dec 10

Snow will linger across Southeast British Columbia and Southwest Alberta on Wednesday before moving into the Northern U.S. Rockies on Wednesday and Thursday. A weak system will also bring more snow to New England on Wednesday and into Thursday. Elsewhere, the next storm approaching from the Pacific will bring snow to Coastal British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest on Thursday, while a weaker storm in the south will result in snow for portions of Arizona and New Mexico.

Forecast for Fri, Dec 11 – Sat, Dec 12

Snow will fall across British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest, and Northern Idaho/Montana on Friday before moving south and east into the Central Rockies on Saturday.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun, Dec 13 – Thu, Dec 17

The storm track will favor Western Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and Northern U.S. Rockies for most of this period, while we could see an occasional storm dip farther south and track across California and/or the Central Rockies. In the East, a storm will be possible around the 14th-15th.

Thanks so much for reading! Check back for my next post on Wednesday, December 9th.
