Weekend storm for New England

Summary

The big story in the near-term is that New England will see its first heavy snow event of the season on Saturday and Sunday. Out west, most of the action will remain way up north in Alaska and Northwest British Columbia from Friday through Monday, before snow returns to Southern British Columbia and Alberta on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Short Term Forecast

New England snow this weekend:

It's been a slow start to the season in New England, but changes are on the way as a powerful storm system travels up the East Coast this weekend. The result will be the season's first significant snow event across Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Check out our 5-Day Powder Finder, which shows the deepest snow forecasts across the Northeast.

Forecast for Fri, Dec 4 – Sun, Dec 6

On Friday, an atmospheric river will continue to bring high elevation snow and heavy low elevation rain to Southeast Alaska and Northwest British Columbia with high snow levels for this time of year. Snow will begin across New England on Saturday afternoon and continue into Sunday with the heaviest snow expected to fall on Saturday night.

Forecast for Mon, Dec 7

Heavy snow and rain will continue across British Columbia on Monday as the storm track begins to shift south, but snow levels will remain quite high. In the East, a weak clipper system could bring some light snow to the Central and Southern Appalachians.

Forecast for Tue, Dec 8 – Wed, Dec 9

A storm cycle will continue to impact Alaska and Western Canada on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the good news is that cold air arriving will result in falling snow levels, with moderate to heavy snow possible for ski areas in British Columbia and Alberta. Another weak system could bring light snow to parts of the Northeast on Wednesday, but confidence is low.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu, Dec 10 – Mon, Dec 14

The storm track out west will be most favorable for British Columbia during this period, while a weaker storm or two will be possible across the Western U.S. (dotted lines indicate possible storm tracks in the Western U.S.). The Northeast should remain in a fairly active pattern as well with additional snow chances during this period.

Thanks so much for reading! Check back for my next post on Monday, December 7th.
