Good snow out West, midweek East Coast storm

Summary

Snow returned to the Western U.S. over the weekend with deep totals for New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. An active pattern will continue across the West this week with most major mountain ranges expected to see nice snow totals add up. A major East Coast storm in the middle of the week will bring heavy snow to the eastern-most ski areas in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England.

Short Term Forecast

Recent Snow for the West

The pattern turned more active over the past several days across the Western U.S. with heavy snow falling across the Central and Southern Rockies especially. Northern New Mexico scored a deep weekend with 3-day snow totals (as of Sunday morning) including 21 inches at both Angel Fire and Taos.

Utah and Colorado also picked up heavy snow over the weekend with Snowbird, Alta, Telluride, Wolf Creek, Aspen, Snowmass, and Beaver Creek all recording deep totals. Check out the 5-day snow reports across the West for the period ending Sunday morning (December 13th).

Forecast for Mon, Dec 14 – Tue, Dec 15

Snow will linger across California into early Monday before spreading across the Central Rockies later Monday and into Tuesday. In the East, the Central Appalachians will also see a round of snow on Monday, heaviest in the West Virginia mountains. On Tuesday, a stronger storm will move into British Columbia with heavy snow expected, while snow will also pick up across the Cascades and Northern Idaho later in the day.

Forecast for Wed, Dec 16 – Thu, Dec 17

A powerful storm will move up the East Coast during the middle of the week with heavy snow expected for portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England on Wednesday and Thursday, favoring eastern-most ski areas with less snow potential farther inland and into Northern New England.

The West will also stay active as a strong and wide-reaching storm system brings heavy snow to the Pacific Northwest, Northern Rockies, and the Sierra Nevadas in California.

Forecast for Fri, Dec 18 – Sat, Dec 19

Snow from the mid-week system will track across Utah and Colorado on Friday. Another strong storm will bring more snow to British Columbia and Washington on Friday and Saturday with Northern Idaho and Montana getting in on the action Saturday as well.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun, Dec 20 – Thu, Dec 24

The Northwest, Northern Rockies, and Western Canada will be the most favored for additional storms during the early portion of this period, while the Central Rockies (and possibly California) could see a storm arrive around the 22nd or 23rd. The Northeast could see some snow around the 21st and/or 22nd, but with mild temperatures expected, rain could potentially be an issue.
