Nor'easter results in massive snow event for the East

Summary

The East was walloped by a powerful Nor'easter on Wednesday and Thursday with some epic snow totals coming in so far. Snow from this storm has come to an end, but in the West, a series of storms will continue to deliver the goods to the Northwest and Northern Rockies through Tuesday.

Short Term Forecast

Deep in the East!

The East scored a huge storm this week with heavy snow totals from West Virginia to Southern New England. The highest preliminary totals as of Thursday afternoon have come in across Pennsylvania, New York, and Southern Vermont with 20-44 inches being reported at many ski areas. Here is a deep shot from Bromley in Southern Vermont, who had picked up 33 inches as of Thursday afternoon.

Forecast for Fri, Dec 18 – Sat, Dec 19

The West has continued to see good snow this week as well. Snow will linger across the Central Rockies early on Friday while the next storm brings another round of snow to the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies from Friday afternoon through Saturday.

Forecast for Sun, Dec 20 – Mon, Dec 21

The Northwest and Northern Rockies will continue to be favored for heavy snow on Sunday, while another storm arriving will bring another round of moderate to heavy snow on Monday to areas south of the border in Washington, Idaho, and Montana. The Northeast will also pick up some light snow on Sunday and Monday as a weaker storm moves across the area.

Forecast for Tue, Dec 22 – Wed, Dec 23

Snow will continue into Tuesday across the Northwest and Northern Rockies before the storm tracks east with snow possible across ski areas in the Upper Midwest on Wednesday. The Northeast could also see another round of light to moderate snow on Tuesday. The storm track will shift north across Western North America on Wednesday with heavy snow expected in Alaska.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu, Dec 24 – Mon, Dec 28

A storm system moving across the Eastern U.S. could bring some snow to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast just in time for Christmas. In the West, high pressure will result in dry conditions for many areas early in this period, but then we'll see a couple of weaker systems try to sneak into Southern British Columbia and the Western U.S. with low confidence in terms of favored storm tracks.

Thanks so much for reading! Check back for my next post on Monday, December 21st.
