Deep in the Northwest

Summary

Storms have been slamming Western Canada and the Northern Cascades over the past week with deep totals adding up. The storm track will continue to favor the Northwest early this week with falling snow levels after a brief warm-up, while parts of the East will see snow late this week right around Christmas.

Short Term Forecast

Recent Snowfall

Snow has been piling up in both the East and the West over the past week, which is what we like to see! Most recently, the Northwest and Northern Rockies picked up heavy snowfall late last week and over the weekend, especially in British Columbia.

Check out our Five Day Snow Totals (updated daily) from Wednesday morning, December 16th through Sunday morning, December 20th. Powder King in Northern BC was the big winner with 67 inches of snow, while the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England received deep totals from a Nor'easter last Wednesday and Thursday.

Forecast for Mon, Dec 21 – Tue, Dec 22

A series of storms out west will bring heavy snow (and lower snow levels) to Southern British Columbia, Southwest Alberta, the Washington/Oregon Cascades, and Northern Rockies on Monday and Tuesday. In the East, the Central Appalachians will also see a round of snow on Monday night and Tuesday with West Virginia expected to be the most favored area.

Forecast for Wed, Dec 23 – Thu, Dec 24

A quick round of snow will move across Colorado early on Wednesday, then high pressure will build out west with the storm track shifting north bringing heavy snow to Northern BC and Alaska on Wednesday and Thursday. A storm will also arrive in the East on Thursday with the Central and Southern Appalachians being favored with the initial round.

Forecast for Fri, Dec 25 – Sat, Dec 26

Christmas Day on Friday is looking fun across the Central Appalachians with snow expected from West Virginia to New York, while the Upper Midwest will also get in on the action. Snow could potentially extend north and east into New England, but models are currently in poor agreement so confidence is low. The next storm will arrive in the West on Saturday, and early indications are that the Sierras including Tahoe could be favored.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun, Dec 27 – Thu, Dec 31

The storm track during this period looks to favor the Sierras and Southern Rockies in the West, while a storm could also bring another round of snow to the East as we close out the year.
