Big storm cycle ahead for the Northwest

Summary

The Southwest picked up a good round of snow early this week from Southern California to Southwest Colorado. The storm track will favor the Pacific Northwest during the second half of the week and into New Year's weekend with deep totals adding up. An active pattern is expected across the entire West next week.

Short Term Forecast

Storm train to return to the Pacific Northwest

Early this week, the Southwest and Southern Rockies saw a good storm with the deepest snow totals reported at Silverton (CO), Wolf Creek (CO), Eagle Point (UT), Big Bear (CA), and Purgatory (CO). Over the next 7 days, an active storm track will set up over the Pacific Northwest with deep totals expected to add up across British Columbia and Washington.

Check out the model forecast "plumes" for projected snow amounts at Mt. Baker through January 5th. Most models are projecting snow amounts to range from 40-70 inches.

Forecast for Wed, Dec 30 – Thu, Dec 31

A storm will move across the Northwest on Wednesday and Thursday with the heaviest snow totals expected across Coastal British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Northern Idaho. A weaker storm will move across the Northeast on Wednesday and Thursday with many areas seeing a rain/snow mix.

Forecast for Fri, Jan 1 – Sat, Jan 2

The next storm out west will favor British Columbia and Washington once again as we ring in the New Year on Friday and Saturday, with light to moderate snow for the Northern Rockies, Oregon, and California. Another warm system will impact the Northeast on Friday and Saturday with a mixture of rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow.

Forecast for Sun, Jan 3 – Mon, Jan 4

A stronger storm will impact the West on Sunday with heavy snow expected for British Columbia, the Cascades, Sierras, and Northern Rockies. Another storm will be right on its heels with more snow arriving on Monday in the Pacific Northwest and possibly the Sierras. In the East, some models (such as the one pictured below) are projecting a storm on Sunday and Monday, but others are not showing this storm, therefore confidence is very low.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue, Jan 5 – Sat, Jan 9

An active pattern is expected for nearly the entire West during this period with the storm track shifting far enough south for the Central and Southern Rockies to get in on the action, while the Pacific Northwest, Sierras, and Northern Rockies will continue to pick up additional snow.

Thanks so much for reading! Check back for my next post on Friday, January 1st.
