New England Weekend Snow + Improved Forecast Data

Earlier this week, we began updating the automated forecasts on OpenSnow with a proprietary blend of data from the GFS (American), GDPS (Canadian), and ECMWF (European) weather models, which will increase accuracy and confidence in the forecast. Additional improvements include more accurate snow-to-liquid ratio calculations and a more accurate method for calculating the snow level (i.e. the rain/snow line).

Take a look at this forecast for Saddleback, Maine (from Thursday night) who is expected to see a good round of snow this weekend. Speaking of Maine, a storm will bring a welcome round of snow to Northern New England on Saturday. Snow levels could rise to 2,500 feet or so before falling again on Saturday night, so higher elevations and more northerly locations will be the most favored. Forecast for Fri, Jan 15 – Sat, Jan 16

A storm will move across the Upper Midwest and Central Appalachians on Friday with all-snow for some areas and a mix of snow and rain for others. New England will see its main round of snow arrive on Saturday with all-snow expected across higher elevation resorts in Northern New England and a rain/snow mix for lower elevation areas and Southern New England. 

In the West, Coastal BC and Alaska will see another round of snow on Friday, but this storm will weaken as it moves inland with only a quick round of light snow showers for the Rockies on Friday night and Saturday.

Forecast for Sun, Jan 17 – Mon, Jan 18

A trailing disturbance will bring additional snow showers to the Mid-Atlantic and New England on Sunday and Monday. In the West, the next storm will bring another round of snow to British Columbia and Washington on Sunday, while the Northern and Central Rockies will pick up light snow on Sunday night and Monday with perhaps a few flurries making it south into the Sierras.

Forecast for Tue, Jan 19 – Wed, Jan 20

Another relatively weak storm will move from northwest to southeast across Western Canada and into the Northern Rockies on Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, an area of low pressure moving across the Southwest could potentially lead to a good round of snow across the Four Corners region, but confidence is low at this time. Additional light snow showers will be possible in the East as another disturbance arrives.

Outlook for Thu, Jan 21 – Mon, Jan 25

The storm track will become more favorable across the Western U.S. during this time with the Sierras and Central Rockies expected to see improving snow potential. The pattern will remain active across the Northeast as well with another storm possible around the 22nd.
