Colorado gets slammed this weekend

Summary

A strong, slow-moving storm will tap into Gulf moisture and deliver heavy snow to a large portion of Colorado on Saturday and Sunday, with the deepest totals (measured in feet) expected near and east of the Continental Divide. Snow will also fall across Eastern Wyoming, Southern Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, while a storm up north will impact Northern & Western British Columbia.

Short Term Forecast

Massive storm for Colorado on Saturday and Sunday

A well-advertised storm will bring heavy snow to most mountain ranges in Colorado over the weekend. The Front Range and areas on the east side of the Continental Divide will receive the brunt of the storm with several FEET of snow possible, but ski regions on the west side of the Divide will also do quite well.

Check out the 5-Day Powder Finder map below for Friday through Tuesday to get an idea of where some of the deeper totals are expected. Also, be sure to read the Colorado Daily Snow for a more detailed analysis of this impressive storm.

Forecast for Fri, Mar 12

Snow will taper off across California (following an outstanding mid-week pattern for Tahoe) as a slow-moving area of low pressure moves east. Snow will favor Southern Utah and Northern Arizona on Friday while Colorado will also see light snow. Up north, a storm will impact Northern British Columbia with the Coast Range favored for the heaviest amounts.

Forecast for Sat, Mar 13 – Sun, Mar 14

The big storm will impact Colorado on Saturday and Sunday with huge snow totals expected for some areas, especially the Front Range. Eastern and Central Wyoming will also receive the brunt of this storm, while portions of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico will be on the periphery with light to moderate snow expected.

A storm will continue to impact British Columbia over the weekend with snow extending farther south, eventually reaching the Washington and Oregon Cascades on Sunday. A series of weak disturbances along with colder air will also impact New England on Saturday and Sunday with periods of snow showers expected.

Forecast for Mon, Mar 15 – Wed, Mar 17

A slow-moving but weaker storm will move across the West during the Monday-Wednesday timeframe. Models are in poor agreement on the track of the storm, but the latest trends are hinting that the Central/Southern Rockies and possibly the Sierras may end up being the most favored, despite what this particular model shows.

Another storm is projected for the Northeast on Tuesday-Wednesday with rain and/or snow possible.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu, Mar 18 – Mon, Mar 22

The pattern should take a break across the Rockies during this period with the best chances of snow expected across the Pacific Northwest and Coastal British Columbia in particular. Meanwhile, a colder pattern will develop across the East and New England could pick up at least some light snow from time to time.

Thanks so much for reading! Check back for my next post on Monday, March 15th.
