Snow opportunities for the West and East this week

Summary

A progressive pattern will result in a series of weak storms from coast to coast this week, with Colorado looking the most favored over the next couple of days. Higher elevation ski areas in the East could see their first dustings of the season. The long-range outlook (day 6-10) looks snowy for the Pacific Northwest.

Short Term Forecast

Early openings for California ski resorts

Last week's storm cycle dumped enough snow in the Sierra that Mammoth Mountain and Palisades Tahoe were both able to open for the season this past weekend. A rare early season treat for these areas to spin their lifts in October! These two resorts join Colorado resorts Wolf Creek, A-Basin, Keystone, and Loveland among those who are open early this season.

Forecast for Mon 11/1 – Tue 11/2

We will see an active start to the week as back-to-back storms move across the Central Rockies, favoring Colorado for the highest snow totals. Across the Cascades and Sierra, warmer air will result in high snow levels and rain for most ski areas.

Alaska will continue to get pounded early this week after some locations received their heaviest 24-hour precipitation amounts on record last weekend.

The East will also see back-to-back storms on Monday and Tuesday with some high elevation snow possible across the Appalachians and New England. The Upper Midwest will also see some snow on Tuesday.

Forecast for Wed 11/3 – Thu 11/4

The next storm will impact the Northwest on Wednesday and Thursday with rain/snow spreading into the Northern Rockies by late Thursday. This will be another warm storm with relatively high snow levels and rain for some ski areas.

A cool and active pattern will continue across the Upper Midwest and the Northeast with snow showers expected. The Southern Appalachians could see some high elevation snow as well.

Forecast for Fri 11/5 – Sat 11/6

Light snow showers will linger over the Northern and Central Rockies on Friday morning, then the next storm will impact the Northwest from late Friday through Saturday. Colder air will be arriving with this storm, resulting in lowering snow levels and better chances for Northwest ski areas to receive some base-building snow.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun 11/7 – Thu 11/11

The pattern during this time is looking most active over the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada with frequent storms and colder temperatures expected. The Sierra and Northern U.S. Rockies could also get in on the action.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (11/3).
