Colder pattern ahead with snow opportunities for the East
Summary
A pattern shift will occur late this week and into next week with colder temperatures for the East along with multiple chances for snow. A milder pattern will set up out West with the storm track favoring high elevation rain and low elevation snow across Western Canada with occasional light snow showers for the Northern U.S. Rockies.
Short Term Forecast
Snow potential for the East over the next 10 days
A pattern shift will occur over the next several days with snow chances and colder temps arriving over the Upper Midwest initially, then across the Mid-Atlantic and New England this weekend and into next week. The colder pattern will be great for snowmaking as Eastern resorts gear up for the upcoming ski season, and there will be several opportunities for natural snow as well throughout the Appalachians and the Great Lakes.
Forecast for Wed 11/10 – Thu 11/11
Lingering snow from the previous storm will taper off across the Rockies early Wednesday morning. Another storm will impact the Northwest and the Rockies on Wednesday and Thursday with warmer air resulting in a change-over from rain to snow across PNW ski areas by Thursday.
A strong storm will also impact the Upper Midwest with heavy snow possible across Northern Minnesota on Wednesday night and Thursday.
Forecast for Fri 11/12 – Sat 11/13
Snow showers will continue over the Upper Midwest with activity spreading eastward into Wisconsin and Michigan. As the storm reaches the East, parts of the Appalachians will see a changeover from rain to snow by later Saturday, though the southward extent of the snow is uncertain at this time.
Moisture arriving from the northwest could also result in light snow over the Northern and Central Rockies at times, but confidence is low on how this may set up.
Forecast for Sun 11/14 – Mon 11/15
A stronger storm and cold front will bring the potential for more widespread snow throughout the Appalachians from Maine to North Carolina on Sunday night and Monday with moderate accumulations possible for some areas. Colder temperatures will result in good snowmaking conditions as well. Ski resorts in the Upper Midwest will also see more snow showers.
In the West, a strong storm is possible across British Columbia with heavy snow for high elevation ski areas and rain for low elevation ski areas. Once again, some light snow also can't be ruled out across the U.S. Rockies but confidence is low as the pattern will be marginal.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Tue 11/16 – Sat 11/20
A colder and more active west/northwest flow pattern is expected out West during this period, favoring Western Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and the Northern U.S. Rockies for the best snow potential. A cool and active pattern will continue over the Northeast as well with good snowmaking conditions and additional opportunities for natural snow.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (11/12).
