Active pattern for Canada and the Northern U.S.

Summary

The storm track will favor northern areas through the weekend and early next week, including the Northwest, Upper Midwest, and Northeast. Higher elevation ski areas in BC and Alberta will see heavy snowfall with rain at mid to low elevations, while the East will see two main rounds of snow showers over the next 5 days.

Short Term Forecast

Snowy pattern ahead for the higher elevations of Canada

Multiple storms involving atmospheric rivers will impact the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada over the weekend. Rain will be the favored precipitation type for most PNW ski areas, but higher elevation resorts across the British Columbia Interior and Alberta will likely see heavy snow, especially on Sunday and Monday.

This is great news for Banff's Big 3 ski resorts who just opened for the season during the past week!

Forecast for Fri 11/12 – Sat 11/13

Lingering snow showers from a Thursday night storm will taper off over Northern Colorado early Friday morning. The next storm will bring heavy snow to northern and higher elevation southern portions of BC and Alberta with mostly rain for Washington. The storm will weaken as it moves into the Northern U.S. Rockies with light rain and snow showers on Friday night and Saturday.

In the East, the colder backside of a storm system will result in snow showers over the Upper Midwest on Friday and Mid-Atlantic & New England on Saturday.

Forecast for Sun 11/14 – Mon 11/15

A stronger storm will bring very heavy snow to higher elevation areas of BC and Alberta on Sunday and Monday, with snow levels (i.e. the rain/snow line) beginning to lower from northwest to southeast on Monday as a cold front moves through.

Another storm will move across the Upper Midwest and East on Sunday and Monday with cold temperatures and snow showers. This snow shower activity will be more robust compared to the previous storm.

Forecast for Tue 11/16 – Wed 11/17

A faster-moving storm will move from northwest to southeast across the Cascades and Northern/Central Rockies with colder temperatures and a round of snow expected. Heavy snow over Western Canada will linger into early Tuesday before tapering off later in the day. The Northeast should also see some lingering snow showers on Tuesday.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu 11/18 – Mon 11/22

A colder northwest flow pattern will set up over a portion of the West during this period with Western Canada, the PNW, and Northern/Central Rockies seeing the best chances of snow. The Northeast will see additional chances for snow and/or rain as a relatively active pattern continues.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (11/15).
