Huge storm for Canada, East also turning active

Summary

A powerful storm is producing deep snow totals across the higher elevations of Western Canada early this week. Otherwise, the upcoming week will feature generally weak storm energy and light snow across parts of the Western U.S., while the East will see a more active pattern with cold temperatures and multiple rounds of snow.

Short Term Forecast

Big Storm for Canada

A strong storm featuring an atmospheric river is resulting in heavy snow across the higher elevation ski resorts of British Columbia and Alberta. As of early Monday morning, Revelstoke had received 22" (56 cm) of snow in 48 hours and its Gnorm the Powder Gnome Cam was completely buried.

Forecast for Mon 11/15 – Tue 11/16

Heavy snow will continue across BC and Alberta on Monday with rain changing over to snow at low to mid-elevation areas as a cold front moves through. Washington and Oregon will also see a changeover from rain to snow. The Northern U.S. Rockies will see more of a glancing blow from this storm aside from a significant cooldown with generally light snowfall expected.

The East will see an active start to the week with colder temperatures and lake effect snow showers expected throughout the Mid-Atlantic and New England on Monday.

Forecast for Wed 11/17 – Thu 11/18

The Western U.S. will see a quieter period of weather mid-week, while farther north, a storm will bring heavy snow to the coastal ranges of Northwest BC and Southeast Alaska. The East will see another storm but warmer air arriving will result in a transition to rain through Thursday afternoon for most areas.

Forecast for Fri 11/19 – Sat 11/20

A cold front will move across the East on Thursday night with another nice round of snow showers to follow through Friday, favoring New England and New York.

A moderate storm will also move across the West on Friday, but confidence is low in terms of the storm track with the Northwest and Northern Rockies seeing the best chance of snow, while snow potential for the Sierra and Central Rockies is less certain.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun 11/21 – Thu 11/25

Thanksgiving Week is looking colder and more active across the Eastern U.S. with additional snow chances expected along with good snowmaking conditions. High pressure will continue to be the dominant weather feature over the Western U.S. with the main storm track located farther north over British Columbia.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (11/17).
