Canadian Rockies & New England have best conditions right now
Summary
An active pattern across the north resulted in impressive snow totals over the weekend at Lake Louise, Banff Sunshine, Killington, Bromley, and Stowe. These same regions will be favored over the upcoming week while the Western U.S. will remain in a snowless pattern for a bit longer.
Short Term Forecast
Canadian Rockies off to a great start this season
A series of atmospheric rivers have impacted Western Canada over the past 5 days. While many ski resorts in British Columbia have seen a recent changeover to rain due to warm temperatures, the colder and higher resorts on the Alberta side such as Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise have received heavy snow and are enjoying outstanding early season conditions.
As of Monday morning, Banff Sunshine has received about 40 cm (16 inches) of snow in the past 48 hours.
Forecast for Mon 11/29 – Tue 11/30
Another warm/wet storm will impact the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada on Tuesday with rain for many ski resorts, while higher elevations in British Columbia and Alberta will see heavy snow.
A weaker storm will move across the eastern half of the continent early this week with a round of snow for the Upper Midwest on Monday and the Northern Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday with lake effect favored regions seeing the most snow.
Forecast for Wed 12/1 – Thu 12/2
Heavy rain and high elevation snow will continue across Western Canada on Wednesday before tapering off on Thursday. Even the Canadian Rockies resorts on the Alberta side could see low elevation rain for a time before changing back to all-snow on Wednesday night.
Another storm will move across the Upper Midwest and Northeast on Wednesday and Thursday, but some areas could see rain mix in due to warmer air arriving.
Forecast for Fri 12/3 – Sat 12/4
A series of disturbances with colder air and lower snow levels will move across the Upper Midwest and Northeast on Friday and Saturday. A colder storm will also move across the Northwest on Saturday with a round of snow for British Columbia and possibly Northern Washington.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Sun 12/5 – Thu 12/9
A colder and more active storm track will set up over the Northwest during this period with improving snow potential for the Pacific Northwest, Northern U.S. Rockies, and Western Canada, while the East will remain in an active pattern with additional snow chances as well. Areas farther south in the Western U.S. (Tahoe, Central Rockies) should eventually see snow at some point during this period, even if only a little bit.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (12/1).
