Snowy weekend ahead from California to Colorado

Summary

An active pattern will return to the West this weekend with moderate to heavy snow falling across the Central & Southern Rockies as well as the Sierra Nevada Range. A strong storm will also impact the Northwest on Tuesday-Wednesday with an active pattern to follow for the West through mid-March. The East could also see a storm late next week along with a significant cooldown.

Short Term Forecast

Snowy weekend for the Sierra and the Rockies

Back-to-back storms will impact the Sierra and the Rockies from Friday through Monday with moderate to heavy snow totals adding up following a week of mild & spring-like conditions. Ski resorts with the deepest snow forecasts during this period include Wolf Creek (CO), Snowbird & Alta (UT), Brighton & Solitude (UT), Arapahoe Basin (CO), Steamboat (CO), Taos (NM), and Mammoth (CA). 

Forecast for Fri 3/4 – Sat 3/5:

Snow will favor the Sierra, Southern Oregon Cascades, and Northern Rockies during the day on Friday as the first storm moves into the Western U.S., followed by heavier snow across the Central and Southern Rockies on Friday night and Saturday. A storm will also begin to impact the Upper Midwest on Saturday with a mix of rain, snow, and ice expected.

Forecast for Sun 3/6 – Mon 3/7:

Snow will taper off across the Sierra & SoCal Mountains early on Sunday, while the Rockies will continue to see moderate to heavy snow on Saturday night & Sunday followed by lingering light snow showers on Monday.

The Upper Midwest will continue to see mixed precipitation into Sunday with rain for the Northeast. On Monday, another storm with colder air will begin to impact the Northeast with snow developing across Upstate New York and mixed precipitation near the NY/PA border.

Forecast for Tue 3/8 – Wed 3/9:

A storm arriving from the northwest will bring moderate to heavy snow to Western Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and Northern U.S. Rockies on Tuesday and Wednesday. A storm will also impact the Northeast on Tuesday with moderate snow expected for portions of New York and New England.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu 3/10 – Mon 3/14:

An active pattern with colder than average temperatures is expected for a large portion of North America during this period. This West will continue to see storms with the Northwest and Northern/Central Rockies favored for the deepest totals, though the Sierra should also get in on the action from time to time. A more significant storm is also possible across the East during this period along with a sharp cool-down.
