Storm favors the Rockies this week

Summary

A slow-moving storm arriving from the north will bring snow to much of the West between Monday and Friday with the Rockies being favored for the highest totals. This storm will be accompanied by a late-season shot of arctic air. Heading into this weekend (3/12/-13) and next week, BC and the PNW will be the most favored. The Eastern U.S. will mostly see rain this week with only a few exceptions.

Short Term Forecast

Snow for the Rockies this week

A slow-moving storm will drop from north to south across the Rockies this week with locally moderate to heavy snow expected. Ski resorts with the deepest snow forecasts over the next 5 days include Alta/Snowbird (UT), Grand Targhee (WY), Snowbasin (UT), Wolf Creek (CO), Aspen/Snowmass (CO), Steamboat (CO), Pomerelle (ID), and Taos (NM).

Forecast for Mon 3/7 – Tue 3/8:

Snow from this past weekend's storm will taper off across Colorado and the Four Corners region on Monday morning. Light to moderate snow will develop over Western Canada and the Northwest on Monday before extending into the Northern U.S. Rockies on Monday night and Tuesday.

A storm will impact the East from Monday through early Tuesday with snow falling from Michigan to Quebec, while the Northeast U.S. will see mostly rain except for near the Canadian border where snow could mix in, while higher elevation Eastern areas could also see some light snow on the backside of the storm.

Forecast for Wed 3/9 – Thu 3/10:

Snow will continue across Oregon and the Northern U.S. Rockies on Wednesday and will continue to extend southward into Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico through Thursday. The Upper Midwest could also see some snow arrive on Thursday afternoon, while a storm impacting the Mid-Atlantic will produce rain for most areas but perhaps some high elevation snow for West Virginia.

Forecast for Fri 3/11 – Sat 3/12:

Snow will linger across Southern Colorado and New Mexico into Friday before tapering off on Saturday. The next storm will begin to impact Northern and Central BC along with SE Alaska on Saturday with moderate to heavy snow expected.

A storm involving a strong cold front will impact the East on Friday and Saturday with moderate to heavy snow in the "cold sector" across the Great Lakes region and Southeast Canada, but in the "warm sector", the Eastern U.S. will see most of its precipitation falling as rain with only light snow expected on Saturday after the cold front moves through.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun 3/13 – Thu 3/17:

The storm track will favor the Pacific Northwest, Western Canada, and Northern U.S. Rockies during this period with frequent storms expected. The Central Rockies (UT, CO) look to be right on the edge of the storm track, while the Sierra may end up on the drier side. The Northeast will also remain in a cold and unsettled pattern with additional snow chances expected.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (3/9).
