Storm train continues for the West
Summary
Heavy snow has been falling throughout the West so far this week with snow totals of 2-4 feet being reported across the Northwest from the last storm. Storms will continue to impact the West daily from Wednesday through Saturday followed by a break for most areas on Sunday and/or Monday. However, winter will not quit as an active pattern is likely to return to the West next week with more snow.
Short Term Forecast
Late season fun continues across the West
A huge storm impacted the West early this week with multi-day storm totals (as of Tuesday) including 48 inches at Mt. Hood Meadows (OR), 44 inches at Timberline (OR), 35 inches at Alpental (WA), 30 inches at Red Lodge (MT), and 28 inches at Crystal Mountain (WA).
More snow was falling on Tuesday as well, which will continue to add to these totals with deep conditions throughout the Northwest.
Heavy snow was also being reported throughout Utah and Colorado during the day on Tuesday with deep totals likely to show up on Wednesday morning's reports.
Forecast for Wed 4/13 – Thu 4/14:
Snow showers will continue on the backside of the previous storm across the Oregon Cascades and Northern/Central Rockies. Another storm will then arrive on Wednesday night and Thursday with more snow for these same regions, while heavy snow will also extend southward into the Sierra Nevada Range including Tahoe.
A strong storm will also impact the Upper Midwest with heavy snow possible for northernmost portions of Minnesota, while areas outside of ski regions in North Dakota and the Canadian Prairies will see heavy snow and blizzard conditions.
Forecast for Fri 4/15 – Sat 4/16:
Snow showers will continue across portions of the Rockies through the daytime hours on Friday, then another storm will reach the West Coast on Friday night with heavy snow developing across Tahoe and the Cascades, while snow will also pick back up across the Northern Rockies and possibly into Northern Utah during the day on Saturday. Snow showers will continue across the Upper Midwest both days as well.
Forecast for Sun 4/17 – Mon 4/18:
Snow showers will linger across the Northern Rockies through at least the first part of the day on Easter Sunday, then a drying trend will ensue across the West heading into Monday with warmer temperatures and more sunshine. However, the break will be short-lived with snow reaching the Cascades and BC Coast Range later Monday as the next storm approaches.
Colder temperatures will also return to the East with snow showers developing over Northern New York and New England on Easter Sunday, while the Upper Midwest could potentially see another round of snow on Monday.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Tue 4/19 – Sat 4/23:
An active pattern will return to the West during this period with multiple storms possible. The Pacific Northwest, Western Canada, Tahoe, and the Northern/Central Rockies should all pick up more snowfall in this pattern. The East will also be in a colder pattern with high elevation snow possible at times.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (4/15).
