Powder-filled week across the West, more snow this weekend

Summary

Ski resorts that are still open across the West have seen deep snow totals over the past week with unseasonably cold temperatures and low-density snow quality more reminiscent of mid-winter. Another storm will impact the West on Saturday with Tahoe being favored for the deepest snow totals. Two more storms early next week will favor the Northwest and New England will see some snow as well.

Short Term Forecast

Rockies and Pacific Northwest score mid-week powder days

The Pacific Northwest received huge snow totals early this week with additional mid-week snowfall as well. The Rockies also got in on the action on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with impressive snow totals adding up. Check out the scene from Alta during this latest storm cycle.

Some of the more impressive snow totals from Sunday through Thursday include 59" at Mt. Hood Meadows (OR), 53" at Timberline (OR), 47" at Alpental (WA), 37" at Mission Ridge (WA), 31" at Red Lodge (MT), 26" at Snowmass (CO), 23" at Winter Park (CO), 21" at Brighton (UT), 17" at Alta (UT), 16" at Big Sky (MT), and 14" at Palisades Tahoe (CA).

Forecast for Fri 4/15 – Sat 4/16:

Snow from a departing storm will linger across the Northern/Central Rockies on Friday, then another storm will bring heavy snow to California on Saturday with moderate snow spreading into Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. 

Snow showers will continue across the Upper Midwest on Friday and to a lesser extent on Saturday, while a storm will reach the Northeast on Saturday with low elevation rain and a mix of rain and snow across the higher elevations of New York and New England.

Forecast for Sun 4/17 – Mon 4/18:

Snow will fall across the Rockies on Saturday night and into early Sunday before tapering off on Sunday afternoon for most areas. The next storm will then reach the Northwest Coast during the day on Monday with snow developing over the BC Coast Range and WA Cascades.

Colder temperatures and snow showers can be expected across Upstate New York and New England on Sunday. A stronger storm will then bring another round of snow to the Upper Midwest on Sunday night and Monday with a mix of rain and snow spreading into the Northeast on Monday afternoon.

Forecast for Tue 4/19 – Wed 4/20:

A stronger storm will impact the Northwest on Tuesday with heavy snow for BC, Washington, and Oregon, while the Sierra and Northern Rockies could pick up some decent snow totals as well. Another storm is then projected to reach the BC/Washington by Wednesday afternoon.

A mix of rain and snow will occur across the Northeast on Tuesday with the potential for heavy snowfall across portions of New England. The Upper Midwest could also see another late-season storm on Wednesday.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu 4/21 – Mon 4/25:

A slow-moving storm is projected to move across the Sierra and the Central Rockies during this timeframe with more snow expected, followed by a possible warming/drying trend late in this period. The East and Midwest will head into a warmer spring-like pattern with little if any snow expected.
