Big storm for New England

Summary

The storm we've been talking about all week will complete its coast-to-coast journey on Fri-Sat with a substantial snow event for New England & New York. Cold temps and more snow are likely for the East next week. Out West, it just won't stop snowing in places like Alta & Steamboat. Once this lingering moisture finally clears out, the storm track will take aim at the PNW & Northern Rockies.

Short Term Forecast

First major storm of the season for New England

Ski season got off to a slow start across the East this season due to mild temperatures and frequent rain events. However, that is changing in a hurry as a major storm will impact New England and New York on Friday & Saturday with deep totals expected followed by lingering snow showers on Sunday. Check out the projected 3-day snow totals below.

The good news for Eastern skiers is that this won't be a one-and-done event. A pattern featuring sustained cold and additional shots of snow is expected to continue across the eastern half of North America through the holiday season.

Forecast for Fri, Dec 16 – Sat, Dec 17:

Heavy snow will fall across the Northeast on Friday and Saturday with deep totals adding up. Snow showers can also be expected on the backside of the storm across the Great Lakes region.

Out West, a little bit of moisture in a northwest flow will continue to produce snow showers and flurries across the Rockies. This pattern has been persistent in recent days and has produced surprisingly high totals in areas such as Alta/Snowbird and Steamboat.

Forecast for Sun, Dec 18 – Mon, Dec 19:

Snow shower activity will continue across the Great Lakes and Northeast on Sunday and Monday with additional refills expected. Out West, an arctic front will work its way southward toward the U.S./Canada border before stalling and will act as a focal point for snow in Southern BC, Washington, and Northern Idaho/Montana.

Forecast for Tue, Dec 20 – Wed, Dec 21:

An active pattern will set up across the Northwest and Northern Rockies during this time with 1-2 storms expected. Another storm is expected to move across the Great Lakes and Northeast as well.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu, Dec 22 – Mon, Dec 26:

The storm track out West will favor the British Columbia Interior and Northern U.S. Rockies as a northwest flow pattern sets up. Warmer air reaching the West Coast will favor more rain than snow across the Cascades of Washington & Oregon.

Meanwhile, very cold air will filter into the Central and Eastern U.S. during this period and a storm is also likely to impact the East in the days leading up to Christmas.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (Dec 19).
