Slow-moving storm continues to march eastward

Summary

A single storm will eventually end up producing heavy snow from coast to coast with Tahoe scoring the goods last weekend followed by Utah/Colorado early this week. Next up, the Great Lakes will get in on the action Wed-Thu followed by the Northeast on Fri-Sat. Early next week, storms will return to the PNW while very cold temps can be expected for most of North America leading up to Christmas.

Short Term Forecast

Storm heading East after dumping heavy snow in the Rockies

A slow-moving storm produced several feet of snow across the Sierra Nevada Range last weekend, before moving into Utah and Colorado on Monday and Tuesday with deep totals adding up. Alta and Snowbird both received a preliminary storm total of 38 inches of snow (as of Tuesday).

Check out the scene from Snowbird on Tuesday:

Colorado scored a nice powder day on Tuesday with Steamboat and Wolf Creek reporting the highest preliminary totals (as of Tuesday).

From Wednesday through Saturday, the storm will continue its eastward journey across North America with heavy snow expected across the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes region as well as New York & New England.

Forecast for Wed, Dec 14 – Thu, Dec 15:

Heavy snow will fall across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the UP of Michigan during this period. Some ice/rain will be a factor during the warmest part of the storm before changing back to snow on Thursday as colder air arrives. Check out the Midwest Daily Snow for the latest scoop.

This storm will also reach the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday with a wintry mix of snow, ice, and rain expected from West Virginia to Western New York.

Out West, snow showers will continue across Colorado on Wednesday, then a weak disturbance will move across the Rockies from the north/northwest from late Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of light snow from Alberta to Utah & Colorado. Further north, a strong storm will bring heavy snow to Alaska.

Forecast for Fri, Dec 16 – Sat, Dec 17:

Heavy snow can be expected across New England, New York, Northern Pennsylvania, and Quebec on Friday followed by backside snow showers on Saturday. Additional snow showers can be expected across the Great Lakes Region as well.

Out West, another weak disturbance could produce some flurries across the U.S. Rockies. Light snow showers will also develop along the leading edge of an arctic cold front in BC and Alberta on Saturday.

Forecast for Sun, Dec 18 – Mon, Dec 19:

A storm will impact the Pacific Northwest during this period with low snow levels expected as arctic air pushes into the area. Additional snow showers can also be expected across the Great Lakes, New England, and Mid-Atlantic, with some of this activity expected to be lake-effect in nature.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue, Dec 20 – Sat, Dec 24:

During the week leading up to Christmas, the storm track will likely favor the Northwest, Northern Rockies, Great Lakes, and Eastern U.S. Confidence is high that this period is also going to be very cold (and in some cases, downright frigid) across a large portion of North America, with the only notable exception being California where temperatures should start to warm up.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (Dec 16).
