Relatively quiet Lower 48, BC & Alaska stay active

Summary

Recent storms have delivered the goods to much of the West and some parts of the East over the past 5 days. Heading into the second half of this week, the pattern will quiet down a bit across the Lower 48 with just some shots of light snow here or there while the East will be dealing with mixed precip. Snowfall will be more abundant up north in BC and Alaska with frequent storms expected.

Short Term Forecast

Recent Snow Totals:

A storm impacted the Western U.S. over the weekend and early this week with moderate to heavy snow totals adding up from the Sierra to the Wasatch. Further north, a series of storms impacted the Pacific Northwest with several days of snowfall resulting in nice totals adding up over time. Northern BC has continued to be the most favored for deep totals.

Here is a view of the deepest 5-day snow reports as of February 7th:

Forecast for Wed, Feb 8 – Thu, Feb 9:

Snow will taper off on Wednesday morning across the PNW with many areas likely waking up to deep totals from the day before. The Central Rockies from Montana to Colorado will also see a quick round of snow on Wednesday as the storm scoots across the Intermountain West. Another storm will impact Western and Northern BC on Thursday with moderate to heavy snow expected.

New England will see some high-elevation snow showers and low-elevation rain showers on Wednesday morning. The next storm will then impact the Midwest and East on Thursday with all-rain for the Mid-Atlantic while snow will change to rain or ice across New England. In the colder sector of this storm, portions of Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan could pick up some nice snow totals.

Forecast for Fri, Feb 10 – Sat, Feb 11:

A series of storms will continue to impact BC and Alaska during this timeframe, while weaker energy will reach the coastal ranges south of the border with light snow for the Cascades as well as the Sierra Nevada Range.

A storm will continue to impact the Northeast on Friday with rain changing over to snow showers as a cold front arrives. However, only light amounts are expected for New England, though Quebec could pick up some decent totals.

Forecast for Sun, Feb 12 – Mon, Feb 13:

A weak storm will move across California into the Southwest U.S. with generally light snow expected for most of this region, though confidence is low in the exact storm track. Further north, a stronger storm will impact BC before working its way southward into the Northwest U.S.

A storm is also expected to impact the Southeast early on Sunday with snow possible for the mountains of North Carolina and Southwest Virginia, but confidence is low at this time.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue, Feb 14 – Sat, Feb 18:

The storm track will continue to favor the Pacific Northwest during this period with occasional snow possible further south in the Sierra and Central U.S. Rockies. Temperatures will be colder than average throughout the West. Across the East, abnormally warm temperatures will persist, favoring rain or mixed precipitation.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (Feb 10).
