Where to find Christmas Powder

Summary

The western US and Canada will continue to see the powder pile up, and Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico have the best chance to wake up to powder on Christmas Day.

Short Term Forecast

There is nothing better than deep, blower powder. It’s special because it doesn’t happen very often. This was was the scene at Canadian Mountain Holidays (heli skiing) at the K2 Lodge near Nakusp, British Columbia, on Monday, December 19th. Yesssssssss!

Many skiers love to brag about when the snow was “waste deep” or when we got “face shots”, but the reality is that this doesn’t happen very often. You need about 18-24 inches of super light, blower snow, and a relatively steep pitch, to achieve true over-the-head blower pow.

Looking ahead, the most snow through Christmas day should fall in California & Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and northern New Mexico.

On Christmas morning, the best chance of seeing snow flakes falling and skiing fresh powder will be in Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. Some areas of Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana may see light snow as well.

Extended Forecast

Looking toward the week after Christmas, most models agree that the best chance to find powder in North America will be in the northern Rockies and northwest.

I do not trust the details of the longer-range forecasts beyond about Tuesday, December 27th, so stay tuned for future updates as I’ll try to steer you toward the most snow.
