Southern Utah Storm

Summary

Fresh snow fell for several resorts yesterday! Conditions this morning are good. Additional chances for snow tomorrow (Monday) as a weak system moves through the area.

Short Term Forecast

Yesterday's weak system delivered to select areas as it strengthened as the cold front moved south.  Essentially, areas from SLC/PC southward received fresh snow.  The Cottonwoods saw the highest total as a cold northwest flow behind the front enhanced snowfall a bit.  5-6" reported for the 4 Cottonwood Canyon resorts with generally 0-2" elsewhere.

A break today (Sunday) before another weak system moves in tomorrow.  A few inches possible for the high elevations of Northern Utah.  The cold front will move south and then stall and pivot in southern Utah.  It will draw up some additional moisture from the south.  Southern Utah could do well Monday night into Tuesday.  Could be a Tuesday powder day at Brian Head.  Great news as legit powder days have been few and far between down south (and up north).

Another break late Tuesday into Wednesday before another trough drops into the region on Thursday.  Again, chances for snow thru the high elevations of Utah.  Yet another break late Friday and Saturday before it looks like yet another chance for snow next Sunday.

The good news is that the pattern is relatively active with frequent chances for snow.  The bad news is that at this point none of these systems look particularly strong.  A few inches here and a few inches there.  Obviously this is better than just ridging, but we desperately need a storm cycle with significant snows.

We've been talking lately about the differences in the models.  Euro continues to be the more optimistic of the two main models over the next 10 days:

Notice the higher amounts in southern Utah largely due to tomorrow and Tuesday's storm. The GFS (below) shows far lesser totals, particularly in the north as it has the systems later this week as much weaker:

It's worth noting that the 12z GFS is coming in right now and it is moving toward the EC, particularly for the Thursday storm.  Perhaps we can get some halfway decent snowfall out of these storms.

Extended Forecast

Beyond next weekend, the general forecast remains largely unchanged.  The ridge will remain parked over the eastern Pacific.  For the most part, this blocks strong storms from moving in.  The European ensemble mean keeps the ridge far enough west that we should see a continuation of storms dropping in out of the northwest.
