Storm Has Arrived

Summary

Moisture streaming up from the south will bring periods of heavy rain and snow to Utah today. The heaviest precipitation will be in southern and central Utah mountains. More storms are looking likely for next week!

Short Term Forecast

Snow has been falling overnight in southern Utah mountains. A live look at around 6am of snow at Brian Head shows good accumulation!

Based on the tables, I'd say a conservative estimate of 8"... perhaps as much as a foot. If anybody is down there and can provide an exact amount... Anyway, lots more snow coming.  The forecast for them was 12-18" with up to 2 feet possible if everything came together just right.  Looks like they are on track so far.

Eagle Point also saw snow last night.  Here is a comparison of going from bare ground yesterday to snow-covered overnight:

Still pretty dark, but it looks like at least 6" of fresh snow.  Both of these resorts will continue to see snow off and on today, tonight, and tomorrow morning before starting to clear out.

In Northern Utah, showers are just starting to push thru the region and we've seen some rain and high elevation snow showers already. You can see a push of moisture moving into the region right now (6am):

I'd expect off and on snow for the Wasatch today and tonight.  Heaviest accumulations should be south of I-80.  Accumulations are still so tricky, I could realistically see them ranging anywhere from just and inch or two to 6+".  I'm just going to hope for the best and that we can get some consistent snowfall today and tonight...

The entire state clears out late Thursday into Friday and we should have a mostly clear weekend.  The next storm will push in for Monday into early Tuesday.  This system is moving quickly out of the NW and has limited moisture, but could be good for a light to moderate snowfall in Utah mountains.  GFS is currently stronger than the EC with this feature.

Extended Forecast

As we head toward Thanksgiving holiday, all models continue to bring storm energy into the area.  The GFS FV3 operational has been waffling a lot so I wouldn't take any single run too seriously -- although yesterday's 18z sure was nice to look at.  Instead, I'll post the old GEFS mean, which shows a general increase in precip thru the end of the month:

The good news is that the European ensembles, which I trust more, are even more aggressive with precip amounts in the long-range.  Good news!  Right now it looks like we'll have another storm around the 27th or 28th (Turkey Day).  Then, perhaps, yet another for later in the holiday weekend and as we head into December.  We should make up our snow deficit quickly if this scenario plays out as expected.
