One More Storm

Summary

We are almost done with our storm cycle. We have a break today (Wednesday), but winds will pick up on Thursday ahead of the next storm which pushes in early Friday with one last round of snow.

Short Term Forecast

Yesterday's wave performed roughly as expected. Areas farther north, like Beaver Mountain saw the brunt of this system with a persistent fetch of moisture in a WSW flow. I sent two of my colleagues up to Beaver Mountain to ski yesterday and they reported very deep conditions! Totals over the past 48 hours up there are around 30".

Farther south, the system was more of a quick-hitting cold front without the persistent moisture fetch. Thus, as you went farther south, totals tended to drop-off quite a bit. Still, anywhere from 3-11" of snow fell yesterday over most of the Wasatch. Our totals now for the past week:

That is a lot of snow! 5 resorts have seen more than 5 feet of snow. Several others have picked up about 3 feet of snow. As you head south, the numbers drop significantly.

We have a break today (Wednesday), but another storm is approaching. Winds will pick-up tonight into Thursday and become VERY strong. I expect wind holds on mountains tomorrow due to gusts on the ridges out of the southwest.

Snow will begin early Friday morning and continue thru at least the first half of the day. This is not a strong storm and totals are fairly modest:

Still, a general 4-8" is likely which will be enough for some fun turns on Friday and to further soften up conditions as we head into the weekend.

Extended Forecast

We finally have a more extended break starting this weekend into early next week. We should see mostly sunny skies over the weekend with warming temps. The general trend in the last couple days in the models has been to bring a more active pattern back to Utah sooner than anticipated. Both models have at least weak energy bringing a threat for mountain snow middle of next week. Then, perhaps another system for late next week. We are too out for details, and they don't appear to be strong systems, but at least we may not be totally dry from the last week of January.
