It Begins...

Summary

Snow showers today in a SW flow. This will proceed a stronger system that will bring periods of heavy snow late Tuesday thru Thursday to the mountains of Northern Utah along with colder temperatures.

Short Term Forecast

REMINDER: All Utah ski areas/resorts remain closed in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

********************************************************

Snow showers already developed today in a moist SW flow due to a disturbance that is ejecting thru the region. Expect off and on high elevation snow today into tonight. Accumulations should be fairly minor today (1-3") and confined to elevations generally above 8000ft. This is in advance of a much stronger system that will be pushing in on Tuesday.

Snow should develop from north to south on Tuesday with the heaviest snow falling on Tuesday night and/or Wednesday. This system will feature a somewhat stalled cold front boundary. These situations are always a bit of a wildcard because it can be hard to pinpoint exactly where these boundaries setup. The difference in just a few miles can make big differences in snowfall totals.

Eventually, the boundary will progress southeast thru the area late Wednesday or Wed night. Then, we should see a moist NW flow and orographically favored areas could see good snow then. Here is the forecasted snowfall per the latest GFS:

You can see that generally, the best snow should be in the Northern Wasatch north of I-80. The Euro is slightly farther south with the band of heavy snow. Either way, good accumulation looks likely.

For the Cottonwoods, accumulations may remain more on the modest side until the NW flow develops on Thursday. You can see that NAM 12km accumulations really take off later in the storm:

This is a tough storm to forecast amounts. I'd say that a general 1 to 1.5 FEET of snow is likely in the high elevations of the Wasatch, however, there seems to be a chance that a few areas could greatly exceed that if things come together.

This storm will also bring in much colder air. Snow levels will be higher initially, but will drop throughout the storm down to valley floors. The snow toward the end of the storm will be low density. If things were open, I'd be showing you a Stoke Meter registering in the HIGH range right now. But as it is, the stoke meter is quarantined until next year.

Extended Forecast

We should have a break this weekend into early next week. We could see some storm energy return next week. Models not in good agreement at this point.
