Cold Tease

Summary

Cool temperatures prevail in Utah and they will be getting colder as a potent cold trough drops into the Great Basin on Sunday and Monday. Unfortunately, moisture and dynamics are limited, which means only light snow is expected.

Short Term Forecast

We saw a dramatic cooldown over the past 36 hours as an initial dry cold front swept across Utah. Temps in the mountains today dropped into the teens for many locations and the valleys of the Wasatch Front were in the upper 20s. By far the coldest morning of the season thus far and an end to the official growing season.

We will see some minor warming today and Saturday. Then, another, even more potent front moves into the area on Sunday and temps will drop further. Expect highs on Sunday in the 30s in the valleys with 20s in the mountains. This system will also carry the threat of snow to Utah mountains, however it is very limited on moisture and proper dynamic organization to bring anything substantial. We are now within range of the 12km NAM model:

Amounts are pretty meager and really only amount to dusting to maybe a couple inches in a few places. Here is the same map using the European model:

This solution is a little more promising for Southern Utah, but still only shows light amounts.

The good news is that Colorado, to our east, should do much better as the system will pick up more moisture as it moves south and east. This will help to put out the devastating wildfires they have seen in recent days, weeks, and months.

In Utah, we'll have a few days of very cold temperatures that will allow resorts to commence snowmaking (if they haven't already started).

Extended Forecast

The long-range forecast continues to look mostly dry. The storm track retreats to the north and we may be brushed by a couple systems thru the end of the month, but no major snow in sight. We will start out November with a big ridge over the west:

You can see that a deep trough develops in the Gulf of AK. The hope would be that this would eventually progress toward us and would open the storm door. At this point, I would guess that our best chance for storms to finally break thru would be sometime between November 10-20. It's possible it could happen before then, or even after, but looking at long-range trends, that's my best guess right now.
