Very Typical Fall Weather

Summary

A cool trough will cross Utah today through tomorrow bringing cooler temperatures, a few showers, and a chance for a bit of mountain snowfall. We will warm up again later this week. Overall, we should expect quite pleasant weather through the first week of October.

Short Term Forecast

We have a system pushing through Utah today into tonight. It's not strong by any means, but we will see a substantial cooldown on Wednesday as well as the chance for a few showers and even some snowfall in the high elevations. These types of weak troughs are very typical for late September and early October.

Here is the latest model blend for precip amounts through Wednesday afternoon:

Highest amounts will be in far northeast Utah in the Uintas. However, we should see a band of precip late this evening stretching from west-central Utah, northeast through Utah County and into Summit and Wasatch counties. Light amounts likely.

Temps will be cooling off dramatically with highs in the lower valleys tomorrow (Wednesday) only around 60F, with 40s and 50s in the mountains. Yes, that means snow is possible above 8000 feet tonight. When we look at the same NBM output for snow we see some very light amounts in the Wasatch with heavier snow possible in the Uintas:

We will warm up again late week into the upcoming weekend, but we should stay cooler than we were this past weekend. Mostly temps in the 70s in the valleys and 50s and 60s in the mountains. Perfect fall weather, if you ask me.

Extended Forecast

Looking ahead, there's not a strong signal for anything in particular. The first week of October should be mostly quiet. I will note that the fantasyland range ECMWF (and GEFS to an extent) has been showing favorability for troughing during the second week of October:

At this point it doesn't mean much, but I will be keeping an eye on the deterministic/operational model runs to see if any storms show up. As we get deeper into October, real winter storms become more likely. Only a matter of time before we see a storm of substance in the forecast.
