Snow and cold air arrive Wednesday morning

Summary

Tuesday will be warm and dry, then a storm on Wednesday morning will bring cold temperatures, strong winds, and some snow.

Update

The mid-mountain snow stake on Tuesday morning is dry.

But by Wednesday morning, snow should once again be accumulating on the stake.

Between now and then, Tuesday will be dry and warm with high temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

The storm should arrive on Wednesday morning between 3am-6am. During this time, expect intense snow, strong and gusty winds, and rapidly falling temperatures dropping into the teens. The steady/intense snow in the morning should transition to more showery snow during the afternoon. Total snowfall of 2-5 inches seems reasonable – most of this will come in the morning, while an afternoon wind direction from the west is not best for a lot of additional accumulation. The snow will be welcome, but the big story will be strong winds which could delay or close some lifts, especially during the morning and midday.

Thursday will be mostly dry with chilly highs in the 20s.

On Thursday night and Friday morning, a weak storm will brush northern Colorado. We might see light snow, but the better accumulations should stay to our north.

From later Friday through most of next week, we will see dry weather for most of the time. The best chance for light snow will be on Sunday night, but this storm looks weak with just a low chance for decent snow totals.

The good news is that a stormy period may start around December 23-24 and continue through a few days after Christmas. If this happens, it could be the atmospheric kick in the pants that we need for the mountain to finally have a deep enough base and a lot more terrain to open. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for reading and please check back each morning for daily updates!

PS – This week, we are going to make some significant changes to OpenSnow. If you're an All-Access subscriber (thank you!), you'll see no changes. If you are not an All-Access subscriber, here is an FAQ with more details about the upcoming changes, and we hope that eventually, we'll earn your support. We briefly released the changes on our website on Monday afternoon but found an issue, so we undid the changes and will re-release when we solve the problem during the next few days.

Here is a 3-minute video that I made (with my son Levi) to introduce a few of the upcoming changes. Please watch the video to at least see what Levi has to say to everyone at the end (non of this was scripted/rehearsed and I'm surprised it worked out!).
