CHASES ARE HAPPENING NOW! APRIL COMES IN WITH A BOOM.

Summary

This will be a quick update to provide a quick recap on the deep powder coming into the west over the next 7 days. There are so many chases to consider, my head is spinning with ideas.

Update

Today we saw the Sierra storm deliver 5-12 inches to the northern Mountains (24-hour totals) and over 2 feet at Mammoth (Southern Sierra was always the call). Temps were cold and the quality must have been great. The Sierra, especially Mammoth will see additional Wednesday night making for incredible openings on Thursday. Looking at chasing powder for Thursday openings in the Sierra or head to Utah for a moderate storm.

Every model run seems to differ between southern Wasatch (B or LCC), or northern areas from Park City to Ogden (*Pow Mow, SB). My gut tells me that the northern mountains will once again over-perform, but some models still highlight the Cottonwoods. In fact just as I posted, most of the short-term models are highlights the Cottonwoods again.  Expect around .50 inches of moisture for the higher peaks (The elevation provides some advantages for BCC and LCC. BCC might over-perform LCC. Generally, I am going with 5-10 inches for the Ogden area mountains (Pow Mow or SB) and 8-11 inches for the Cottonwoods. BCC might see higher amounts. Most of this snow will fall overnight into Thursday (Great timing). Snow continues on Thursday morning albeit with a lighter intensity.

Southern Utah will score decent totals Wednesday night at Eagle Point and Brian Head (7-15) if you don't want to mess with the Hoopla further north and road closures (LCC closing again at 12:30 AM).

A second system hits Utah Thursday night with a bit higher totals for Friday morning.

Colorado will benefit from storm #2 coming from Utah Thursday night and providing some moderate or low-end heavy snow for the western areas near Aspen, CB, and south to Purgatory and Wolf (Not a huge system). The core of I-70 might grab 3-8 inches (Peak snowfall for Colorado is Friday morning to evening).

The Tetons are in for a repeat of last week with perhaps higher amounts beginning Thursday morning and continuing well into next week. Light snow Thursday migrates over central Idaho from Ketchum to the Sawtooth range (Further north with SV on the southern edge). This moves over the Tetons and southern Montana (Big Sky) Thursday with light to moderate periods of snow through Sunday. Snowfall in the Tetons will peak at some point Saturday/Sunday. Sum totals will be measured in feet in a 4-5 day period in Wyoming with less further north (Big Sky will still have respectable totals).

The big news is a cold front and copious amounts of moisture slated for the PNW including Whistler and the coastal ranges of BC for Friday/Saturday.  That system brings decent totals to all resorts in western Canada, with moderate snow inland, and heavy snow for both Washington and Oregon by Saturday. This system moves over the Rockies bringing good totals for Idaho (Especially the entire Panhandle, northern regions near Sandpoint, and to a deeper extent the McCall area. Most of Idaho will get nailed with this system including Sun Valley this weekend.

The exciting news continues with another good round of snow slated for the Sierra by late Sunday moving over the Wasatch Range for Monday/Tuesday with Colorado grabbing additional snow by early mid-next week. The Tetons and southern Montana are likely to also see some additional snow early next week with higher totals to the south.

Chases?  Take your pick of almost any State including western Canada this weekend. I like the Cascades for Saturday, Tetons for later Saturday and Sunday, Big Sky, nearly every resort in Idaho this weekend, Utah Thursday/Friday, and early next week. Colorado Tuesday/Wednesday next week or even Friday for Western or southern resorts. Southern Utah looks primo for this Thursday. If I missed you it's because I am on the chase.

Below: Total snowfall for the west through Wednesday night.  Nearly every area will at some point see decent totals.

There is so much going on I am getting a bit burned out. We might start to dry out late next week, but it's unclear at this point. April fool's day will be loaded with tricks but in most cases real powder.
