Cold front Monday morning, dry rest of the week

Summary

Expect a sharp cold front early on Monday morning which will bring 2-4 inches of snow to many northern and central mountains. Then the rest of the week will be dry with snow likely returning on Saturday night and we could see a stormy pattern continue through at least mid-February.

Short Term Forecast

Stoke

Let’s start out with some powder stoke from the previous storm cycle!

Thanks so much for sending me lots of pictures and I am happy to share some of them here!

Monday Cold Front

We’ve talked about this for days and the forecast hasn’t changed much. We are still expecting the temperature to drop through the day on Monday with snow between Sunday midnight through Monday afternoon.

The snow will be light with accumulations around 2-4 inches for many northern and central mountains.

The wildcard is the jet stream, which will be overhead and can create narrow bands of intense snow oriented from northwest-to-southeast. If one of these bands happen to hit one or a few mountains, then amounts could quickly go higher than 4 inches.

Drying out

Following the cold front, it looks like we’ll see dry weather all week. Earlier forecasts showed the chance for light snow later in the week, and now the latest forecasts show that this weak system will likely miss Colorado.

Extended Forecast

My confidence is increasing that we’ll see stormy weather return this weekend with snow from Saturday night onward into early next week. Maybe Sunday and/or Monday will be powder days. We’ll figure out the details in a few days.

I am excited to say that the upcoming weather pattern is looking pretty good for early-to-mid February.

In the maps below, stormy weather is depicted by blue colors with the black lines dipping to the south.

February 2-6

February 7-12

Based on the maps above, it appears that the storm around February 3-4 will be just the first of many that we’ll talk about in early and mid-February!

Thanks for reading!

My next update will be on Monday morning.

JOEL GRATZ

I will be on the road (skiing!) through February 8th and while I will try to post every day in the morning as usual, occasionally my posts might be a bit shorter or go live at somewhat different times. Thanks for understanding that I need to get my powder fix as well:-)
