Waking up to snow

Summary

Mountain weather on Saturday morning is snowy and cold with temperatures in the 20s. Expect snow flakes through the day for the northern and central mountains A warming and drying trend will begin on Sunday as temperatures increase 5-10 degrees each day through mid week. Our next chance for cooler weather and snow will occur sometime between October 2-5th.

Details

Let’s go on a picture tour of Colorado on Saturday morning (September 24th). Snow on Friday, Friday night, and Saturday morning has coated the mountains in a blanket of flakes!

(the picture above was taken on Friday afternoon)

The radar over western Colorado was brought back online on Friday afternoon, so we can thankfully see if there is any rain or snow falling on Saturday morning. Spoiler alert - snow is falling.

While the center of the storm has passed to the north and east of Colorado, wrap-around moisture and lift is creating snow showers over the northern and central mountains. These showers should stick around through at least midday to early afternoon, and then should dissipate toward sunset on Saturday

Sunday will be dry, sunny, and about 10 degrees warmer than Saturday with highs in the 40s at around 10,000 feet. Expect sunny and warmer weather through about Wednesday of next week, and then we could experience a few showers and slightly cooler temperatures at the end of next week.

The next chance of a storm (and snow) here in Colorado will occur early the following week, sometime between about October 2-5th. The long-range temperature outlook shows a cooling trend during this time, but I have no details about the next storm as it may hit us directly, miss us to the north, or anything in between.

And now, it’s announcement time!

New Hiking Weather App!

Last week, we launched “OpenSummit”, a new iPhone app that provides hourly forecasts for each 14,000-foot peak in Colorado, including the chance of lightning, precipitation, summit temperature, and summit wind speed. Download the app here: http://opsw.co/OpenSummitapp

Heli Ski Event in Denver on October 6 - Movie, Beer, and Food

Join me in Denver on Thursday, October 6th to learn more about heli-skiing with Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH). I'll talk about my previous trips with CMH, they will show a premiere of their new short film, and free beer and food will be served! This is always a fun event, so if you're interested in taking a heli ski trip this season or sometime soon, I hope you can make it! Please RSVP here: http://opsw.co/CMHDenverOct62016
