Deep Storm Underway, And Another One Next Week

Summary

Resorts in the French Alps are reporting 15-30 cms, with another 10-20 cms throughout the day and into tonight. The next system arrives Tuesday evening with the potential to drop another 25-50 cms with the highest amounts in the western Alps. The Pyrenees and Appenines will get in on the action with this second storm too.

Short Term Forecast

The Alps have been under a very active pattern for several weeks now, with moderate to significant snow storms every couple days. This setup will continue, with today’s storm, less than a day break before the next quick hitting system, and then another substantial storm arriving on Tuesday. Below is a shot from Meribel in France on Friday the 9th.

Forecast for Saturday 12/10 - Sunday AM 12/11

Before the current storm wraps up, another trailing wave will cause snow to redevelop early Saturday morning.  There may not be any break before the snow picks up again from this second wave, which will add another 5-15 cms.

Forecast for Sunday PM 12/11 - Tuesday AM 12/13

What is this? A break in the action? Things will airport down for the first part of the week, with cool temperatures across the region. You’ll have a little bit of time to dig out and rest your powder legs before the next round of snow

Forecast for Tuesday PM 12/13 - Wednesday 12/14

Light snow will develop in the western Alps Tuesday night as the next storm approaches. Snow will intensify Wednesday morning and continue throughout the day, before tapering to flurries later Wednesday night. The Northwestern side of the western Alps will see the biggest totals, as northerly winds will be prevalent during this round of snow. This storm will be on the colder side with snow levels well below base elevations.

High end totals from this storm will be 50 cms + in the upper elevations of the French Alps, with less as you move farther east and on the southern side of the Alps. Resorts like Hauteluce, Les Saises, and Orcieres should do well. Resorts along the France/Italy and Switzerland/Italy border should do well also, with lower amounts in  Austria.

The Pyrenees will see some accumulating snow from this wave too, in the 10-20 cm range, from Monday evening to Tuesday. Below is the European model forecast for snow.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thursday 12/15 - Monday 12/19

The Alps and Pyrenees will finally calm down by the end of the week. Things are looking dry from the 15th to the 16th. Another storm is possible around the 16th that may favor the southern side of the Alps. More details to come.
