One More Storm and then Finally a Break

Summary

The active pattern across Europe continues this week, with another storm bringing widespread snowfall from Thursday through Saturday. We then enter a calm and dry pattern that should stick around for almost one week through the .22nd.

Short Term Forecast

Snow has been falling seemingly non stop for several weeks now across the Alps, with even more resorts opening up. Obertauern in Austria opened up this past Sunday, with solid coverage across the mountain. See below for a shot the day after they opened.

Forecast for Thursday 12/15 - Saturday 12/17

Our next system arrives Thursday morning, with snow developing in the overnight hours first in the Pyrenees, followed by midday in the Alps. The heavier snow will fall from Thursday to Friday, followed by lingering snow showers and flurries. The best day to ski and ride this storm will be Friday, where totals ranging from 20 - 60 cms + are possible. The biggest totals will be found in the French Alps, once again, at resorts like Orcieres, Alps d'Huez, and Les Deux Alps, where up to 50 - 70 cms are possible at upper elevations. In Italy, resorts like Simone Piemonte, Carona, and Asiago, along the France/Italy border, will see the biggest totals, where 15 - 30 cms are possible. Check out the snow forecast below from the European model.

Forecast for Sunday 12/18 - Wednesday 12/21

After the storm clears out on Saturday, an upper level ridge will settle over Central Europe. This will block the path of any storms impacting the Pyrenees and Alps. Check out the upper level pattern below. You can see the orange colors and the concave black lines over southern/Central Europe, which show the ridge overhead.

Forecast for Thursday 12/22 - Friday 12/24

Around Thursday the 22nd, this ridge should break down and once again allow storms to move across southern Europe. A quick moving system looks to pass to the south during this time, bringing back chances for some snow. For now, here is the snowfall forecast from the European model for this fast moving storm later next week.

Since this is still over a week away, please be aware that this forecast can and will change. I just wanted to give you an idea of the type of impact this storm next week could have. I will update this part of the forecast in a couple days.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Saturday 12/25 - Wednesday 12/29

The end of the month has some potential for more snow. The pattern looks active across the Alps and Pyrenees. Stay tuned for additional details in a future update.
