A Few Chances for Light Snow, All Eyes On the Big Storm Possible Next Week
Summary
The new year starts out with exceptionally warm temperatures, with freezing levels around 3000m across much of the Alps. Temperature records are being broken or smashed across Europe, but the warmth will depart and the focus shifts to January 7-10.
Short Term Forecast
It has been Incredibly warm the last few days in the Alps and across all of Europe. Temperatures will remain above normal for the next several days too, right up until the next major storm is possible.
Forecast for Monday 1/2 - Tuesday 1/3
The first few days of the new year will be warm and mainly dry. Spotty flurries and light snow showers possible on the western Alps but accumulations will be minimal and temperatures remain above normal, though not as warm as the mast few days.
Forecast for Wednesday 1/4 - Thursday 1/5
After most of the day is dry on Wednesday, a weak system moves in Wednesday night. Temperatures will still be on the warm side, and accumulations will range from 10-20 cms for the central Alps primarily. Snow will wind down Thursday afternoon and evening.
Forecast for Saturday 1/7 - Tuesday 1/10
Now onto the good stuff. Over the last few days the models have remained mostly consistent with this storm, with the main change being that the storm looks to last longer. A very strong upper level low pressure system will move across Europe, and a few embedded waves in the larger low will allow heavy to moderate snow to continue beyond just the initial thump.
The snow looks to start Saturday night in the western Alps and continue through WEDNESDAY! It is even possible the snow lingers into Thursday as well, but that far out is less certain at this time. Further, this storm looks like it will deliver widespread snow to the entire Alps, with some light snow for the Pyrenees. Sunday through Wednesday could all be powder days, though the deeper overnight dumps look more likely on Monday night and Tuesday night.
I will post a snow map below, for the five days ending Tuesday night. However, with the latter part of the storm being 10 days out, these totals will change. The ensemble forecast shows big totals and snow continuing into Thursday though, so I don't think these totals are unreasonable. Since the storm isn't starting for six days, I won't get into too many specifics regarding totals, but this definitely has the potential to deliver over a meter of snow, conservatively.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Wednesday 1/11 - Sunday 1/15
The pattern looks unsettled during the middle of month, as the upper level low pressure system from the previous storm still lingers over the region. This may result in continued snow showers during this period.
