Summary

The recent storm cycle is finally winding down, with some additional snow in the Pyrenees through the day on Tuesday. We are then looking at an extended period without any measurable snow, and a temperature roller coaster during that time.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Tue 2/7 - Fri 2/10

Outside of some snow falling mainly in the eastern Pyrenees, things will be dry on Tuesday. The initial wave of cold are has already arrived over the Alps, with several reenforcing shots to come. The coldest air will be in the western Alps, on the southern and eastern flanks, on Monday night and Wednesday night. Tempratures during this time, at higher elevation resorts, could be nearly 13 degrees below normal, with single digit highs during the day, and negative single digit lows at night. This will definitely be a very cold stretch. During the day on Friday, a warm front begins to move across the Alps, finally providing a break from the cold. Friday's temperatures should be closer normal before things warm up substantially.

Below is the upper level pattern from the 7th to the 10th. You can see a large ridge of high pressure, which blocks storms from impacting the Alps/Pyrenees, stuck in western Europe.

Forecast for Sat 2/11 - Wed 2/15

After many days of frigid temperatures, the roller coaster makes the turn and starts heading back up. As the warm front moves through the Alps, temperatures will gradually rise. On Saturday, temperatures will be above normal, and that will trend will likely continue for at least the following five days. This won't be as extreme as the scorching stretch in December/Jaunary, but temperatures will climb to 10-12 degrees above normal, with the greatest departues from normal in the central and eastern Alps. Temperatures will climb above freezing across most elevations, and could stay around or above freezing for several days. It's likely only the highest elevations will stay below freezing.

Below is the upper level pattern from the 11th to the 15th. You can see a lthe large ridge remains, just shifted a bit south and east, still blocking storms from moving through the region.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thursday 2/16 - Monday 2/20

The long range models keep the ridge over the heart of Europe in the extended also. Below is the upper level pattenr for this period. Keep in mind that this is 10-15 days out from now, so there is definitely time for this to change.

Right now though, I am not particularly optimistic for this period.
