Big Snow for the French/Swiss Alps on Tap This Week

Summary

After a few mellow days with light snow, heavy snowfall returns to the western and central Alps mid week. Snow will continue to fall thought the end of the week and even into the weekend, with impressive totals. Models keep the pattern active through mid month as well.

Update

There aren't too many changes since the last post. The onset of the main event has been pushed back a bit to Wednesday morning, and the storm should continue through Saturday night/Sunday morning. I am still expecting significant snow totals with this storm, with well over 1m for the higher elevations of the French/Swiss Alps and along the Italian border. This is looking like a very deep storm for this region.

The Alps in western Austria look deep as well, and the models have come into a bit better agreement on the eastward extent of the heaviest snow. Over 50 cms is likely in the western Austrian Alps, and lesser, but still solid totals as you move further east.

The only negative with this storm are the temperatures. Snow levels will be mainly rising through this first round of snow, climbing up to ~1500m by Thursday. Most resorts should stay all snow, but it will be a bit upside down.

Once this storm wraps up, the models are in better agreement on the pattern staying active. Another significant storm is possible from Saturday the 11th to Tuesday the 13th. This has the potential deliver another half meter or more, but it's a bit too early to start getting specific.
