Heavy Snow Continues, Austrian Alps Get Deep

Summary

The active and snowy spring pattern will continue for the next several days, with substantial snow piling up in the Alps. A prolonged period of snow with below-normal temperatures will likely last through the weekend, as a few waves of snow move through the region.

Short Term Forecast

Snow has been falling over the Alps the last few days, with solid totals, especially in France. Check out some images across the French Alps today.

The current wave will bring additional snow to the region, especially the Austrian Alps, with the next round of snow arriving in the French Alps on Wednesday.

Forecast for Thursday April 13 - Friday April 14

A strong and cold upper level area of low pressure has brought snow across most of the Alps the last few days, with solid totals so far. This storm will continue to move through the Alps, bringing additional impressive totals through Tuesday. With below normal temperatures, the snow will be good quality and result in some appreciated April powder days. Snow is already falling, and will pick up this evening, especially in the east side of the Austrian Alps. Moderate to heavy snow will continue through most of the day Friday as well, before becoming more showery Friday night and tapering off by morning. With winds out of the north, expect the deepest totals in the northern side of the Austrian Alps, as seen in the European model's snow forecast through Saturday below.

Expect 10-20 cms in the Pyrnees during this time as well.

Friday April 14 - Sunday April 16

Before the current system exits, the next storm will begin to impact the western Alps, starting Friday evening. Light snow will become heavy overnight, and fill in from west to east. Snow will continue through Saturday night in the French Alps, and through Sunday night in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. The best pow days will be Sunday in the French Alps and Monday for the Swiss/Austrian Alps. Overall, totals for this second round of snow will be in the 25-50 cm ranges for the French/Swiss Alps, with around 20-40 cms in the Austrian Alps. Check out the European snow forecast below.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Monday April 17 - Friday April 21

Once this round of snow finishes up over the weekend, we return to a less active pattern. There may be some lingering snow showers early in the week, but overall things will trend drier as the week goes on. In the longer term, the models keep the dry weather around for a bit longer, with maybe a return to storminess by the end of the month.
