Solid Snow the Last Few Days, Two More Big Storms Lined Up
Summary
Resorts across France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria saw solid snow totals over the last few days, and the next two storms are stronger and colder. Two impressive upper level systems will bring the biggest snow of the season and start building the base across most elevations.
Short Term Forecast
The first storm in this series moved through from 10/30 to 10/31 and delivered some solid accumulations, especially at upper elevations.
We have at least two more storms lined up and the long range models are indicating that this stormy pattern will continue.
The next storm arrives Thursday morning as a strong and deep upper level low pressure system approaches the Alps. This storm will have serious ramifications outside of the Alps prior to its arrival, bringing 170 km/hr winds and heavy rain.
In the Alps, it will equate to heavy snow today through Friday. Snow levels will start between 1800 - 2100m and will fall to 1200 - 1500m by the end of the storm. The heaviest snow will be today and tonight for the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps, and tonight and tomorrow for the Austrian Alps.
Below are the expected snow totals.
- Above 2400m: > 50 cms
- 2100 - 2400 m: 25 - 50 cms
- 1800 - 2100 m: 15 - 30 cms
- Below 1800 m: 5 - 15 cms

Snow showers will linger through Friday night and maybe even Saturday morning in the Austrian Alps. Without much of a break, the next major storm arrives Saturday afternoon. More heavy snow is expected with this storm which should last through Monday afternoon. The French Alps will be favored this time, and an early estimate on snowfall is below.

Extended Forecast
The models are showing another strong storm toward the latter part of next week, with some light snow prior to that. If we look even further into fantasy land, there are some signs the active pattern will continue into mid-month as well.
