Two Storms Next Week, Starting On Sunday

Summary

Yesterday's forecast remains on track. The models have come down a bit on snow totals for the second storm, but overall it remains a strong and impressive storm. Models are still struggling to get a handle on the end of next week, but we should have a few quiet days once this midweek storm wraps up.

Short Term Forecast

Just a short update today, as the main details of these storms haven't changed much since yesterday. We're still looking at a small storm on Sunday, with generally 5 - 15 cms with perhaps a bit more in the Haute-Savoie region of France.

Monday will be dry before the next storm arrives Monday night in the French and Swiss Alps. Unlike the models were showing previously, the heavy snow will likely hold off until Tuesday morning in the French Alps and Tuesday evening in the Swiss Alps. The storm has trended weaker over the past few days, so the snow forecast will be decreased a bit. The heaviest snow will fall Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening, before tapering to snow showers after that.

We still have one more day to see if the models keep this trend of a weaker storm. Below are the updated snow totals.

  • Central/Northern French Alps: 30 - 60 + cms
  • Western Swiss Alps: 25 - 50 cms
  • Eastern Swiss/Western Austrian Alps: 10 - 20 cms
  • Central/Eastern Austrian Alps: < 10 cms

The snow levels may be a bit lower as well, likely in the 1350 - 1650 m range. Winds should not be a major issue with this storm, with strong gusts at higher elevations but limited lift impacts. In France and Switzerland, the best pow days will still be Wednesday, with heavy snow overnight continuing throughout the day, and Thursday, with the potential for some clearing and upper mountain terrain openings.

Below is the latest snow forecast from the European model.

Extended Forecast

The pattern remains active following the mid-week storm, but the models show a wide range of possibilities at this time. This range includes a strong storm impacting the southern French Alps to just some showers throughout the weekend. I will have more details as this period becomes more clear.
