Quick New Year's Day Update

Summary

Heavy snow fell across the western Alps on New Year's Eve and another storm is on the way for Tuesday. Models have continued the trend for a more northerly track and thus a weaker storm, but a period of heavy snow is still expected. The active pattern continues with another storm likely on Friday.

Short Term Forecast

Happy New Year everyone!

The western Alps saw heavy snow yesterday and conditions will be great today. Our next storm is still on track for Tuesday to Wednesday, but the northerly trend in the track has continued. This will lower totals even further, but the western Alps will still receive another round of heavy snow.

The heaviest snow will fall Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with light to moderate snow during the day on Tuesday and showers on Wednesday.

Generally, 15 - 30 cms are now expected in the northern French Alps, with 10 - 20 cms in the western Swiss Alps. Totals drop off fast further east, with 5 - 15 cms for the rest of the Swiss Alps and < 10 cms for the Austrian Alps.

Extended Forecast

The models continue to show another storm arriving on Friday, with a more southerly track. This would favor the southern Alps. Still need another day or two before there's more confidence in this track.
