Next Storm on Tuesday, Active Pattern Continues
Summary
The models continue to bring some last-minute changes but this time for the better. After the next round of snow on Tuesday through Wednesday morning, another wave of heavy snow is expected Wednesday night. Yet another strong storm is slated to arrive on Friday as this snowy pattern continues.
Short Term Forecast
After a great day yesterday across the northern Alps, and particularly the northern French Alps, even more powder days are on tap this week.
The Tuesday storm is still on track, with a solid overnight dump from tonight through Wednesday morning. Snow will taper to showers and hopefully allow for decent visibility and ample terrain. Snow forecast below.
Another round of heavy snow is now expected on Wednesday night as well, producing the third powder day of the week on Thursday. Snow should again taper to showers by morning. Snow forecast below.
As early as midday Friday the next storm will be on our doorstep. The models continue to take this storm south of the Alps, with the greatest totals initially expected in the Pyrenees, southern French Alps, Italian Alps, and southern Austrian Alps. However, as this storm advances through the region, it will stall and undergo some complex changes in the upper levels. The result will be a period of north or northeast flow later in the weekend, which will favor the northern Alps, especially in Switzerland and Austria.
Snow may stick around through Tuesday with this storm, although the heavy snow should end on Sunday morning. Early guess on snow totals from the European model below.
So we are looking at three more storms in the next week, with a brief snow estimate below.
Storm #1 (Tuesday night - Wednesday)
- Northern French/Western Swiss Alps: 15 - 30 cms
- Central/Eastern Swiss/Western Austrian Alps: 8 - 15 cms
- Central/Eastern Austrian Alps: < 10 cms
- Storm #2 (Wednesday night to Thursday)
Storm #2 (Wednesday night - Thursdsy)
- Northern French/Western Swiss Alps: 12 - 25 cms
- Central/Eastern Swiss/Western Austrian Alps: 8 - 15 cms
- Central/Eastern Austrian Alps: < 10 cms
- Storm #3 (Friday - Monday)
Storm #3 (Friday - Tuesday)
- Northern French/Western Swiss Alps: 15 - 30 cms
- Southern French/Southwestern Italian Alps: 25- 50 cms
- Northern French Alps: 15 - 30 cms
- Central/Eastern Swiss/Austrian Alps: 25- 50 cms
- Central/Eastern Italian/Southern Austrian Alps: 40 - 80 cms
- Pyrenees: 25 - 50 cms
Keep in mind that storm #3 is still five days out, so these totals are just an early guess to give you an idea of the potential for this storm.

Extended Forecast
After the lingering snow showers taper off around Tuesday/Wednesday of next week, we should have a few days to recover. In the long-range, around the middle of the month, the models show another strong and deep upper-level low over northeast Europe, with a ridge positioned to the west. This is the type of pattern that can lead to big snow-producing Nordstaus, especially over the Austrian Alps. This is almost two weeks out but it bears watching.
