One More Round of Snow

Summary

The final round of snow from this storm cycle moves in on Friday evening, bringing a period of heavy snow through Saturday morning. The central Swiss Alps will benefit most from this wave, while the northern French and western Austrian Alps will see solid totals. Once this system departs, dry weather is expected for the next few weeks, thanks to a strong upper-level ridge.

Short Term Forecast

Snow has continued to fall in the northern and northwestern Alps over the last twenty-four hours, and it will continue through Saturday morning as the last upper-level pulse moves through the region. This will deliver one more powder day with fresh snow, followed by a cold bluebird day for exploring new terrain.

The snow on Friday will be showery in nature, mostly in the Swiss and Austrian Alps, before becoming heavier in the evening hours. The latest track will produce winds out of the west-northwest, which will focus the heaviest precipitation on the Swiss Alps. Snow levels are still expected to climb on Friday evening before the final cold front brings them back down early Saturday morning. This will be most felt in the French Alps, with only a minor increase in snow levels in the Swiss and Austrian Alps.

Totals from Friday through Saturday morning will be in the 10 - 20 cm range from the northern French Alps through the western Austrian Alps, with higher totals in favored west-northwest flow locations like Chamonix and Engelberg.

Below is the latest snow forecast from the high-resolution WRF model.

The temperatures will stay cold on Sunday, keeping the snow quality good for additional powder turns and better visibility. On Monday, the ridge moves into western Europe starting a slow warming trend.

Extended Forecast

This ridge should stick around for seven to ten days at least before it starts to break down and let some storms back into the region. The models don't have any clear idea of when or how this will happen so for now we'll just have to wait and see for a pattern change around the 20th at the earliest.

My next post will be on Saturday.
