Lots of Action Through Next Weekend
Summary
As of Sunday morning, a nice active stretch is underway as the first of three or four storms moves through the region. The southern Alps, especially in Switzerland and Italy, will be favored during this cycle, but the Pyrenees will also get some much-needed snow. This active pattern will continue through next weekend and possibly into early the following week.
Short Term Forecast
The first storm in this series continues on Sunday morning, with heavy snow falling across much of the Alps. Snow will linger in the eastern Alps through Sunday evening before tapering off, and by then, storm #2 will be bringing snow to the Pyrenees.
This continues to look like a strong multi-day storm with impressive snow totals through Wednesday. The key to this storm remains that it will split, with the main low heading north of the Alps and the other piece of energy south of the Alps. This will allow continued southerly winds in the southern Alps and west/west-northwest winds in the western/northern Alps, which are both favorable wind directions for these regions.
I've reviewed all the other relevant details for this storm, so below is the latest snow forecast for the system.
We're still expecting another upper-level trough to follow this significant storm, which will impact the Pyrenees and Alps from Wednesday through Friday. However, the models don't agree on the snow totals for the Alps, with some taking the low too far south too fast to bring much snow. I'll have more details on that later, but the western Pyrenees should see at least 15 - 30 cm of snow.
Extended Forecast
A very cold and fast-moving storm is still slated to bring additional snow to the eastern Alps next weekend. The northern Alps in Switzerland and Austria would do best, but accumulations look to be in ther 5 - 15 cm range at this point.
My next post will be on Tuesday.
