Northwest Alps Storm Ending, The Dry for a While
Summary
The northwest Alps are getting a good dump that is winding down on Friday morning. The storm track then shifts to the east for much of the next week, as a strong ridge develops over the heart of Europe, which will keep things dry in the Alps and Pyrenees for the foreseeable future.
Short Term Forecast
It's been snowing heavily in the northern French and Swiss Alps over the last few days, resulting in good conditions and some solid powder days. Several northwest wind favored locations in the Swiss Alps, like Engelberg, Turliboden, Etang de Trente Pass, Grand Cor, and L'Ecreuleuse, have already received 30 - 60 cm of new snow.
Below are some of the totals across the Swiss Alps over the last few days.
After this storm winds down on Saturday morning, a strong ridge will build in over central Europe and stick around for several days.
The ensembles have it remaining over Central Europe through at least the 26th.
Extended Forecast
There are some weak signs that we could see a pattern change in the last few days of the month but it's too early to buy into that. We could see a weak storm move through the Pyrenees during this period as well. Stay tuned for more details.
My next post will be on Friday.

NEW: Forecast Snowfall Maps
Visualize the snow forecast in 2D or 3D for the next 6, 12, and 24 hours, along with total snowfall for the next 10 days, for any location in the United States and southern Canada.
The maps are made with our internal blend of high-resolution weather forecast data, including our proprietary snow-to-liquid ratio algorithm that is specifically made for complex, mountain terrain.
Getting Started
- Tap the "Maps" tab.
- Tap the overlay button.
- Tap "Forecast Snowfall".
- Scrub the bottom slider.
What are the main use cases for the forecast snowfall maps?
Get an easy-to-use visualization of the snow forecast for your favorite locations, check the timing of upcoming storms to catch the deepest turns or to avoid snowy road conditions, and see which ski resorts are favored for the deepest snow totals.
Are there any limitations to the forecast snowfall maps?
The forecast snowfall maps count "mixed precipitation" as "snow" so the maps could show more snow in areas that are getting sleet or freezing rain, along with where the rain/snow line is difficult to forecast. Double-check any location by tapping the map for the forecast details.
