More Snow Wednesday Night Through the Weekend

Summary

A small storm will drop down from the north and cross the Alps from Wednesday night through Friday, bringing another round of accumulating snow above 1800 m. The northern side of the Alps, especially in Switzerland, will do better this time around, but as the storm moves south of the Alps, the southern side will get in on the action too.

Short Term Forecast

Another decent April storm is expected to bring more snow to the Alps this week. Snow levels will once again hover around 1800 m for most of the storm, especially in the northern Swiss Alps around Engelberg. Above 1800 m, 20 to 40 cm is possible, with over 50 cm likely above 2400 m.

Initially, as the storm moves from north to south, it will bring primarily north/northwest winds, which will favor the northern Alps from northern France to western Austria. Then, as the storm tracks south of the Alps, the winds will switch to a more southerly direction for the central and eastern southern Alps.

Furthermore, another weak storm is expected to cross the western Alps this weekend, bringing more snow, especially in the western Alps. Much of the northern Alps will see 15 to 30 cm from these two smaller storms. The central and eastern southern Alps can expect 10 to 25 cm, with 5 to 15 cm expected elsewhere in the southern and southwestern Alps.

Below is the latest snow forecast from the high-resolution WRF model through the weekend.

For next week, we'll have more unsettled weather as a few upper-level lows linger in southern Europe. This may result in some rain and high-elevation snow showers, but I don't see any significant storms at this time.

My next post will be on Sunday or Monday
